For Sale: by Barry (baznval@ihug.co.nz)
I have retired from the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and have decided to sell my two double-basses. (I retired on September 21st, 2007) The first is a small German bass (string length 1010mm) with the label “Gerbruda Wolff, Liepzig”. This bass is more suited to solo work and is also an excellent jazz instrument. The second instrument is a bigger French bass (string length 1070mm), has a fingered “C” extension and is an excellent orchestral instrument. Although there is no longer a label, this instrument is possibly a Justin Maucotel with a swell-back. Both instruments are in good condition and both very playable. Photographs supplied and questions welcomed. Barry Johnstone.

For Sale: 1943 Kay C1 3/4 double bass by Andrew (lloyd_andy@hotmail.com)
Ive owned this bass since 95 and it has been my main workhorse for jazz and big band gigs. The finish is pretty beat, and there is some lower bout edge wear, which has been smoothed out. Currently, there are no open seams and no neck breaks. Though the neck may need to be reset at some point, it is currently holding up well. There was some de-lamination on the button when I bought it, but that has been professionally repaired and is very solid. The bridge is cut pretty low, but has adjusters. The bridge has been drilled for a Wilson Pickup. The pickup will not be sold with the bass, but I will include an old Kay German bow along with a used bass bag, if needed. Strings are Spirocore Weichs. The fingerboard is new - high quality ebony about 4 years old. The endpin is also new...pro quality. Scroll, tailpiece, and tuning machines are in good condition. This bass feels great and plays beautifully. Bass is in the metro Detroit, MI area. Will not ship-local pickup only. Asking $1300. I have posted some photos and will be adding more soon. For Sale: Ernth Heinrich Roth bass by Bob (schulmanbob@yahoo.com)
This 3/4 bass was manufactured in 1961 in Bukenreuth Erlangen German but is currently residing with me in the Hill Country north of San Antonio, Texas. The serial number is K 7374. I stopped playing about 10 years ago but have maintained the instrument. I recently decided to begin playing again and have purchased a customized Halfling acoustic bass which, because it is being hand-tuned, will cost a bit more than I initially anticipated. Im selling my E. H. Roth upright to help defer the additional cost. The Roth website offers to appraise the bass at the cost of $210 EUs. You can spend the money on an appraisal if you want. Im not, but I will sell this upright to the highest offer above $5000. I purchased this bass from Eric Rivas, the bass player in Branford Marsalis band. You may also wish to Google Ernth Heirich Roth to get an idea of the quality of this instrument. I played the bass in a jazz trio where it best demonstrates its depth, volume, balance, projection and resonant growl on the E and A strings. Ill send photos to interested parties.

For Sale: 1957 Roth Hybrid Bass with Robertson and Son's C-extension by Donovan (donovan@donovanstokes.com)
This is a 1957 Roth Hybrid Bass with a C extension from Roberston and Sons in Albuquerque. It also has a fingerboard extension (allowing for higher notes), a new steel endpin, Pecanic tailpiece wire, a quality bridge with Ebony adjusters. The fingerboard has been exquisitely set up. I used this bass through my Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees and won my first professional job on this bass. It is in good condition and is currently being used by a Shenandoah Conservatory Student. Asking price is $5300, however I am a "motivated seller" and will consider other offers. This Bass is located in the Northern Virginia/Shenandoah Valley area. (Winchester, VA) Pictures can be available on request. email me at : donovan@donovanstokes.com or dstokes@su.edu You can hear the bass on the CD Gadaha clips available at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/donovanstokes or http://www.myspace.com/donovanstokes.

For Sale: Romanian made 3/4 DB for sale by Heather (rocketcanine@gmail.com)
This is a beautiful Romanian bass. It has a wonderful deep, rich sound..and it breaks my heart to part with it. Unfortunately, Im moving to CA and dont have room, plus need the cash to fund the move. Im asking 2400 obo. It is pictured with Supernil strings, but will come with steel strings (which are barely used) unless you prefer these. I never used the bow, but it does need to be rehaired. There are some nicks at the head, but otherwise is in great condition. I only used this bass at home, so it didnt endure any shows or travel. Has an Underwood pickup and an adjustable bridge. Flat back. Also included is a soft case. Really this is a wonderful bass, and should make any player happy! I can deliver for a fee. I am located in DC, and anyone nearby is welcome to come check it out!

For Sale: Dounble bass, German, c. 1970 by Cary (caryjoseph@earthlink.net)
This is hand carved Bass I bought new in Prague, in 1970. It was my primary bass until a few years ago. It is a great sounding bass for jazz, though I have used it in orchestral work also. It has violin corners, is very fast, and plays beautifully. Set up Sam Kolstein with a Kolstein end pin and adjustable bridge. The bass is in very good condition, but needs to be played and as I am mostly not playing, I feel it should go to a player who can use it. Please contact me if you are interested, I will be happy to send pics. Location: Ithaca (upstate) New York.

STOLEN KAY BASS and amp, accessories wanted by Bob (wingspan10@aol.com)
PLEASE KEEP AN EYE OPEN FOR Kim Collins BASS!! October 6, 2008 sometime between 2:00-5:30 p.m. my acoustic bass and 2 amplifier rigs were stolen from the stage of the Free Methodist Church, 1435 Cliff Dr., SB. The main sanctuary doors are always unlocked during business hours, and we speculate that someone must have seen me bring the equipment in this a.m. (I normally don’t bring my own rig from home) and waited their chance for when the church was quiet. It would have taken 2 trips to get all this stuff (or 2 people) and someone knew how to release Neutrik twist-lock cables from their sockets to grab the stuff quickly. I filed a police report as soon as I discovered the theft, but I would appreciate you all forwarding this to as many people as you can think of who can be on the look out (pawn shops/ebay/Craig’s List/music stores/etc.) to see if I can recover the much valued tools of my trade (especially the bass, as it has great sentimental value as well) Here are the descriptions: KAY M1 3/4 SIZE DOUBLE BASS: circa 1950’s, tan finish (probably was blonder in early years) rather worn-esp. on body by fingerboard where thumb & fingers follow through. It has some unique modifications: the original brass tuning keys mounted on matching plates (Tyrollean style) have been replaced by individual nickel plated tuners mounted on custom cut wood veneer plates that don’t match the rest of the wood either in color or grain. Also, the back and belly have had their edges sanded down & refinished to be level with the binding around the body EXCEPT in the C curves of the bouts where the edges still protrude past the binding. I had mounted an Underwood pickup and a Countryman Isomax condenser mic in the bridge. Both a 1/4” and XLR connector are lashed to the tailpiece with black elastic hair ties. I also had a bow quiver mounted uniquely to the tailpiece, but these things would be easy to remove. The tuning keys and sanded edges you couldn’t hide. One more thing: I had made an endpin out of a thick dowel rod painted black that was nonadjustable. It has a standard silver hose clamp around the top to keep it from cracking. GLASSER FIBERGLASS BOW: French style, 45+ years old, chocolate brown paint, well worn (present from my dad) BLACK NYLON BASS BAG: chrome hardware, bow pocket on front, zippered utility pouch on lower front, double ‘D’ rings on back to adjust straps. One unique feature: I had bolted a 3” round rubber foot to the bottom to protect the zipper from wear. ACOUSTIC IMAGE BASS AMP: Clarus II model-2 inputs (1/4” & XLR) These units are not available in most mainstream music stores-dual level, about the size of a cigar box, with a handle on top level and controls on lower. The thief didn’t take the padded bag that goes with it. AMPEG 110H SPKR. CAB: black ‘fuzzy’ covering, about 16” cubical with a slightly rounded-up face. 10” woofer & 2” tweeter inside. Grayish metal grille plate with the Ampeg logo on front, variable tweeter control dial on back. CARVIN AG100D GT./KEYBD. AMP: 12” woofer & 2” horn. 3 channels w/ 5 band graphic EQ. These units are most distinctive for their forest green vinyl covering. Its late and Im tired-I probably forgot some details, but I wanted to get this out ASAP. I haven’t had time to dig around my records for serial numbers. When I find them, I’ll send them on. I would appreciate this list going as far and wide as possible, as I realize my stuff could already be in LA, SF, San Diego or Timbuktu by now. So if you could take a minute to think of who might be a good “relay person” and send it on, I’d be grateful. Those of you who have special instruments know that it feels less like theft and more like kidnapping when you have one taken! Thanks & Blessings To You, Kim Collins wingspan10@verizon.com

For Sale: AMAZING AMERICAN STANDARD! by Paul (paulunger@sbcglobal.net)
Vintage, One-of-a-kind, American Standard. These basses are limited in number and are very sought after for their incredible sound. This bass is labeled #320. This bass is in amazing condition and plays better than any other American Standard or New Standard I have ever seen. It still has the original finish, original neck and original tuners. I have had significant reinforcement done to the neck block. The overstand has been increased to make playing in and out of thumb position easier, along with a new ebony fingerboard and the string length reduced to 41.5". A new bridge, tailpiece and endpin have also been added. All work was done by Michael Hartery. I used this bass as a solo jazz bass, it plays like butter and is very easy on the left hand. This bass is also the LOUDEST bass I have ever owned. I almost never need an amp. Given all the work I have had done, its great condition, the sound, playability and rarity, I am asking $5,900. Feel free to email me if you have any questions, want more information or for more pictures.

For Sale: 100-year-old German Bass by Richard (ufobass@aol.com)
This 3/4 bass bears no label inside--it boldly delivers what a mere label cannot: that sought-after warm, mature sound, both pizz and arco, that youll love. It has undergone numerous repairs, especially evident on the neck, but all the fixes are solid, leaving no open seams, cracks or buzzes. Ive always imagined owning a bass with this exceptionally authoritative sound. While it might lose the swimsuit competition to one of the shiny new imports, this is a mid-price bass that roars and sings--an easy winner in the talent category against your choice of newbies. The vital statistics: --D neck --Gamba style --dark varnish --upper bout: 20 3/4" mid: 15 1/2 lower: 25 1/2 --body length: 43 1/2 string length: 43 1/2 --new Obligato strings installed June 12, 2008 I only bought this bass several months ago, thrilled to have discovered "the" bass at last, but several financial exigencies have arisen, so reluctantly, I must sell. E-mail: ufobass@aol.com Due to the cost and perils inherent in shipping, I am selling in or around Southern California only.

For Sale: 3/4 German Bass, circa 1965 by Kenton (kenton_hambrick@freddiemac.com)
A fully carved 3/4 unmarked East German bass from the mid-1960s that I purchased at Footes in London in 1974. Footes told me that it was from the Otto Rubner workshop, but I have no documentation to prove that. Gamba form, steeply sloping shoulders, attractive honey color. New fingerboard and adjustable bridge in 2003. 42-inch string length. Includes fitted B-Band D-1 pickup and sturdy new Lemur padded canvas case. Set up for 4-strings but has 5-string tuning machines. Very solid and well-cared for over the years. Currently set up for jazz, with Helicore Pizz strings, but would make a nice student orchestral bass with different strings. Very easy to play. A warm sound that compares favorably to much more expensive basses. Pictures available on request. $3,995.00

For Sale: German made Upright Bass Beautiful Scrolled Purfling by Neil (kendrick.neil@gmail.com)
This bass is a 3/4 size and looks to be all original with the only repair being the twisted wire tailgut replaced with flexible cable. I have researched as best I can and believe it to be a late 1930s William Lewis and Sons. It has no label inside but a sticker from Selmer Paris on the back next to the endpin. It has beautiful scroll work of the purfling on the back. It is a laminated bass with good figure on the outside. It has Thomastek strings on it and medium action. It has a very loud balanced sound from treble to bass. The fretboard has no wear and the bass is in very good condition overall with no need for any repair. The neck alignment on this bass is very good with bridge sitting exactly centered between the "f" holes. Please contact me for more information and pictures.

For Sale: NS Design Electric Upright bass by curtis (chester7ccm@hotmail.com)
NS Design CRT Model Electric Upright Bass. A very nice bass action is good plays very similar to a double bass. The scale of the neck is exactly the same as a double bass. The exclusive Polar pickup has 2 modes of operation, "arco" and "pizzicato", that may be blended together. When blended equally (balance control centered) the response is similar to an acoustic upright. The arco mode enhances sensitivity to the bow, and the plucked response is extraordinarily percussive. In the pizz. mode the percussive attack is reduced for a smooth sustained response. Bass and Treble EQ controls, in combination with the Polar pickup options, provide tremendous tonal range. It comes with a very nice gig back and stand and i could give you my copy of the evolving bassist by rufus reid if you want. Im kingston witch if you dont know of it, it is about half between Toronto and Ottawa. I may be willing to go lower on the price. Email me for more details
